John, Lucy and Bob do a lot of fishing in Sydney. Bob is even heavily involved in teaching children to fish in his spare time so they were keen to get into some fishing in Vanuatu. As you would have it things were a little slow. Day one we had a marlin climb on only to jump over the line and cut itself off.  Later in the day we caught a few small yellowfin, rainbow runner and a shark which we released.

Day 2 fishing in Vanuatu was a little better with 5 small yellowfin and a couple of bonito, a wahoo and Lucy caught her mahi-mahi however a little on the small size so it was decided to go and cast some poppers at the reefs closer to home. We had 4 bites and boated a blue fin travaley and a good G.T.which were both photographed and released.

I have the good fortune to operate 2 charter boats here fishing in Vanuatu and we run them both for over 200 days a year. Some guest are great and some are even greater to work with.

One of the nicest people and avid fisherman that I have come across for a long time is Rob that I had the good fortune to take fishing recently. Rob was to go out on Wild Blue
for an 8 hour charter however we had a cruise boat arrive a day early so I upgraded him to Shogun and had the pleasure of taking him to the F.A.D for some trolling, jigging and some drift baiting. We had a great day, nothing overly big however a good variety. Rob went on to do another day and a half on Wild Blue and caught a good variety of fish. Unfortunately we didn’t get him a marlin but I’m sure he will be back to do some more fishing in Vanuatu.
This guy is the keenest, most patient fishing fanatic I have come across in years. Thanks for coming Rob. As his tee-shirt say’s it all “Work is for those that don’t know how to Fish”

With close to 100 cruise boat we take a lot of people out on game and reef fishing trips. On one particular cruise boat visit that was staying overnight in Vila which is rare Andy and Kate called in to our operation as we just returned home from a charter. They checked out our catch for the day and decided to do a 4 hour trip on Shogun the next day.

We took a leisurely run out to the F.A.D and got amongst the small yellow fin with jigs on light tackle and drifted a few baits about and caught some rainbow runners. Nothing overly big was caught but we all had a great fun morning and I saw Andy and Kate’s jigging skills improve dramatically.

When it comes to Vanuatu Game Fishing Charters there’s not a lot of people that do more than I. For those that know me, you would know that I don’t take holidays and I normally don’t let anyone skipper my pride and joy “Shogun”. Well recently I did both. Leanne and I had our second holiday together in 11 years which was well earnt.

I also left my number 2 skipper Sammy to steer a couple of charters and he did a great job. Sammy and Tommy did an 8 hour charter with the Hughes group and caught a nice marlin. As most would know we tag and release all our marlin however this on had a bad eye injury when it popped up beside the boat so it was decided to take the fish.  We normally give the fish to the hospital or prison in these cases so the fish is not wasted and we don’t gain commercially from caught marlin. Vanuatu Reef Fishing can produce monsters. If you have a look through our videos of some of the trips we do there are some huge fish caught. What I find as a skipper its not all about the monsters, its about having a goods time . Sammy took Ryan MacKenzie and Liam Butterfield  out for a four hour charter and the boys had some fun  bottom bouncing on the reef.

I see a lot of people book a charter for 4 or 8 hours and want to take the family out and catch huge fish, this a lot of time requires us to head out wide  and remember you are out in the ocean and a lot of times it ends in tears. The family gets sea sick or bored and the younger anglers get over it all and the days not fun. For the younger anglers take them to the reef and hopefully the fish are co-operating and everyone will have a great day. The smile on these two is worth every moment of what we do. I love my job.

We have just had a visit from the cruise boat the “The World”.

We had the good fortune to take some of the guests on a couple of 4 hour charters. As we know 4 hours is not a long time to go game fishing on the big scheme of things however we always try and do our best in the time frame we have to work in.

The first trip saw Sammy take our guests  on Shogun out to Pango F.A.D and they came back with three wahoo that would come up well  after the kitchen staff on the “The Word” had weaved their magic. For the morning session Nancy Binz  came up as the star angler.

The afternoon charter saw a few fish not hook up however Mike De Graffenried  picked up a nice yellow fin for this time of the year.

I have been doing fishing charters in Vanuatu for 11 years now and  I really there is still one thing that really gets up my nose. Trying to match customer expectation to reality. The day before  I took Stuart and Steve fishing I had a customer that had booked an 8 hour charter. He hopped on the boat with his son and a friend and as I was doing my boat and safety brief he said mate don’t worry too much about all this I just want to wind in big fish. I went on to explain that game fishing is a numbers game and that we have been having some great days and a few slower ones. His reply was he wasn’t interested in the slower ones and that he saw a show we did with Escape With E.T and wanted the same sort of action. I went on to explain the 8 minutes of content that was shown took a week to shoot.

To cut a long story short by 10.30am we had 3 small tuna in the boat and we were working Tuki-Tuk F.A.D with some baits fishing for mahi-mahi. Conditions were a little sloppy and windy and we managed to get a bait caught on the F.A.D.

I backed up and  Tommy the decky unhooked it. Several minutes latter I saw Tommy looking at me a little bewildered and I asked what was wrong. Tommy came up onto the fly-bridge and said our angler was swearing at his son. I climbed down and asked if all was O.K and said if was anything to do with the bait hooking the F.A.D it wasn’t his son’s fault. the angler said it is was about his son getting his runners wet as we were backing up. He then started on me about the lack of big fish and that he demanded to be put int fish.  By this stage I had all that I was going to take and told him I was terminating the charter and from there headed home.

The next morning Stuart and Steve arrived for their charter on Shogun and as I was doing my brief again Steve says all he wants is to catch plenty of fish. Need less to say my reaction was not probably as they expected and I must admit I wasn’t that proud of how I handled the situation. As the day unfolded the boys caught quite a few good fish and a great day was had by all.

I discussed the issue with the boys later on and apologized for my reaction and what came from the discussion is that a lot of operators web sites over state and over promise what they can in reality deliver. I had this same situation a week before when I did a charter for a fishing tour wholesaler, the guest were sold something that wasn’t real and we at the coal face have to mange this and try and fix disappointment.

I think sometimes fishing shows don’t help the cause nor do people putting footage of fish being caught and not stating where the footage was shot as sometimes it might be a day from port however anglers are led to believe they are going to see this action on a 4 hour charter 5nm from the jetty.

I try and manage expectation and reality by encouraging customers to ring me before they come or book anything. I carry a mobile phone on me at all times and the time zone here is similar to New Zealand and Australia so if you want to know what is being caught or you want to target a species ring me for some advice. If you cant reach me ring the office and  Leanne my partner and she will update you or pass on the message to me and I’ll get back to you and when it comes to Fishing Charters in Vanuatu I promise I will not over state and under deliver.

A huge product in our business is a 4 hour Vanuatu Fishing Charter. A lot of these are shared charters and some solo’s. The biggest difficulty is getting peoples expectations in line with reality. Four hours is not a long time to go game fishing and sometimes guests want to do some reef fishing as well so that leaves even less time to catch a marlin or a fish of a lifetime for that matter. Every now and then someone will do a four hour fishing charter and have a blinder and this was the case with Ed. Ed wasn’t sure about even doing a charter then his wife said he was mad not to, “your in Vanuatu, why not go out and have a go”

Ed decided to book a 4 hour charter. Conditions were dead calm so we headed south toward the Pango F.A.D. We had a marlin bite on the way out but it didn’t hook up. We were at the F.A.D and were clearing the gear to do some jigging and a blue marlin kame screaming in and ate the shotgun lure only meters from the boat. With a bit of free spooling and then on with the drag the fish was on. As Ed started fighting the fish a second one was jumping around a little further out.Ed soone had the fish to the boat for a release. We started heading back home and at about the half way mark another 2 blue marlin jumped on. This time we lost one, a fairly big one at that and Ed soon had the smaller one to the boat. We ended up seeing 5 had 3 on and caught 2. Not a bad 4 hour charter however it doesn’t happen all the time. When it comes top fishing in Vanuatu be careful what you wish for. Christopher Cook from Oregon, USA came to Vanuatu for a holiday with his partner and did a charter with another operator. The day didn’t work out as Christopher planned so he gave us a ring and booked a half day on Wild Blue. He mentioned he would like to have a shot for a doggy so the boys took him to one of our hot spots and bingo a 21kgs dogtooth tuna climbed on.

Not the biggest dogtooth in the world but a good fish by all means. Christopher was staying at Paradise Cove with his lovely partner celebrating an anniversary so it was sashimi all round and the kitchen were instructed to wipe up a storm with rest of the fresh fish.

When it come to game fishing in Vanuatu for dogtooth tuna Port Vila has some good spot but if you want to have a big dip at them we have some great trips through the islands that have some amazing dogtooth action .
