Fishing In Vanuatu is great most days and even better others. Mark came to Vanuatu to complete some work on a turtle monitoring program out on Mosso Island just north of Port Vila. He was staying in town for a day or two before he headed out to the island and heard the yellow fin were about and asked us if we could fit in a 4 hour charter. We shot out after lunch and headed for Pango Bird. A couple of hours into the trip a blue marlin of about 60kg climbed on and was soon released by the boat. Less than an hour later we had about 3 strikes, one being a mahi-mahi and the other 2 yellowfin. the only one that stuck was the yellow fin and after an hour battle turned out to be a 60kg model. Mark booked another charter for his return from the island so having a little longer time we headed north. By late morning we caught another blue marlin. this time it was much bigger at about 140kg and latter in the afternoon caught and released a nice sail fish at about 30kg. I reckon mark had a pretty good couple of days fishing here in Vanuatu.

Marlin Fishing In Vanuatu rates up there with the best in the world. As a lot of people do these days Andrew had his holiday in Vanuatu booked and organised before he left Australia. He had contacted us a said he would like to do a couple of shared 8 hour charters while he was her. Unfortunately or more so fortunately we weren’t able to math him up with another angler so he opted to take Shogun on his own for a day.

During the boat brief Andrew mentioned some yellowfin action and a marlin would be nice however he understood that the fish pich so even a G.t would be nice.

We headed out to where the yellowfin have been frequenting of recent and there were a few birds but no action. We took a run past the Fish Aggregating Device and had a double hook up of mahi-mahi. From there is was further north and by 10.30 we were hooked up on a marlin. After about 10min this was released to fight another day.

By lunch we had a yellowfin hookup but ended with a pulled hook. We had another yellow fin strike but no cigar.

The day was rounded out with a sailfish attack at Devils Point on the way home. The sail had a put on a few lures and in spite of the boys trying hard to tease the fish up it just wouldn’t hook up. A great day out though.

A good days fishing in Vanuatu. When it comes to game fishing, Vanuatu has got to be up there with the best. Will and Christie were here in Vanuatu on a family holiday. Originally they booked Shogun for a days fishing with 4 other guests. As we see so often when it comes to crunch time and seeing who is actually going on the charter the numbers drop. Some wives won’t allow their husband to go or vica versa or any of the million other reasons people come up with.

Will rang me the night before the charter to let me know the numbers had changed so we didn’t over cater for lunches and refreshments which was greatly appreciated. One the morning of the charter Will and Christie arrived and brought with them a heap of their own tackle as well.

A Good Days Fishing In Vanuatu

Will mentioned during the boat brief that he would like to catch a marlin however he was keen just to catch some fish.
We got to the fishing grounds and there were yellow fin everywhere but not easy to catch. We had one on and got bitten of and latter caught another. We went on to catch some X.O.S skip jack tuna and then rounded out the afternoon with a blue marlin. Well done to Will for sticking to his guns and coming fishing when everyone else had pulled out and he was well rewarded. Game fishing in Vanuatu doesn’t get any better than that.

People come Game Fishing in Vanuatu for all different reasons. Ultimately its to catch fish however the reason that the charter is booked varies. Today we conducted a charter for a birthday group from New Zealand, Australia and the U.K. This was a party group of 40 that decided to come to Vanuatu to celebrate several birthdays in the group at one location at one time. What a great idea. They booked out the Sunset Bungalow Resort for themselves and partied hard. Quite a few came scuba diving over several days and a group of 6 did a charter on Shogun today. The game fishing activity was not overly busy but a few great fish were caught and some swimming and reef fishing filled out the day.

With three months of predominantly westerly through to northerly winds or should I say breeze have kept the sea conditions amazingly calm with not much more than half a meter of gentle swell each day.

The fishing has been good most days with most of the action being to the south of Port Vila. These areas are difficult to get to when our prevailing south easterlies are blowing so it’s been great to get into these regions most days.

Marlin have been turning up in much larger sizes that previous months with most being well over the 100kg mark and some around 200kg.

Yellow fin and bonito are passing through as well however the yellow fin have been under 10 kg and bonito up to 10kg and these schools have been traveling pretty quickly making staying with them a difficult task and they have been also quite difficult to get to hook up.

The Port Vila Game Fishing Club and the Fisheries Department along with several operators are currently in the process of deploying some additional F.A.D’s in the area to replace the ones Green Piece cut off for us in an attempt to improve the world.

Dogtooth tuna have been thick and fast around the reef areas along with good sized wahoo. On a recent live-aboard trip to Erromango Island we were getting smacked by wahoo in excess of 20kg constantly and we have a great day on doggies around Goat Island. Most of these were around the 15kg mark however great fun on the appropriate tackle.

We at Wild Blue fishing charters have started doing our live away trips for the year and the first was a trip to Erromango with Richard and Bonnie

The first couple of days were spectacular taking advantage of the calm conditions and the fishing was hot with wahoo over 20kg belting us regularly. The yellow fin were on the small size even though they were abundant especially around the Vulcan Seamount.

A couple of species on Richards wish list even though this was his 6th trip fishing with me in Vanuatu were a sail fish which Bonnie has previously caught and constantly reminded Richard, a dogtooth tuna and a G.T.

First light on day one had us hooked up on a sail and tagged and released shortly after. After a day of fishing Richard landed his first doggie at last light as we were entering Dylans Bay for the night.

The end of day 2 saw Richard capturing at least 6 good 6 doggies and a G.T . Bonnie had also caught several personal best making for a great couple of days. Day three’s plane was to head on to Tanna and take in the Volcano that evening however at about 6 am Leanne contacted me from Port Vila on the satellite phone to inform me that a tropical low had formed suddenly and we could expect 40kt plus northerly winds so it was decided to head for home. By lunch time the wind was well up there and getting worse. It turned into a long 14 hour trip home with gale force winds on the nose and it was good to see the lights of Port Vila as we rounded Pango Point.

The weather had blown through a day later so we were on our way again for another couple of days. This time we went north. The fishing on this leg was a little quite however the overnight stay at the new Wahoo Bay at Havanah Harbour was great. Owner operator Andrew Colautti kept us entertained and his kitchen put on a great feed. The fishing was not good at all straight after the blow but a great time was had by all.

Richard and Bonnie are already talking about the next trip so I have got my thinking cap on to create another adventure for them

Fishing In Vanuatu again or Richard and Bonnie

Fishing in Vanuatu has been a favorite pastime for Richard and Bonnie Lorenzine from Sydney Aust. The trip this year we decided to take advantage of the extremely calm conditions due to the north westerly wind that are way out of character for this time of the year and head south to Erromange and then on to Tanna . En early departure on day on saw us hooked up on a sail first thing at Pango Point. It was on to Vulcan Seamont for some yelloow fin and wahoo action. The first night was spent anchored in Dylans Bay, Erromango. Day 2 provided lots of wahoo and doggy action and some of the best was at Goat Island just of the coast of Erromango. The third day had us heading further south to Tanna however a cyclone warning was enough to cause a change of plan and head back to Port Vila. By about 11.00am that morning we were punching through 4 to 5m seas for a long 12 hour trip home. We had a lay day the next day to let the wind subside then we were off north for more fishing. The next evening was spent anchored up at the Wahoo Bar in Havanna Harbour.

The last 2 days of fishing was a little slower than the first few day but great time was had by all.

Richard and Bonnie are booked for a 6 day trip north in Feb 2012 so stay tuned.

As a lot of you know I write an are report for Blue Water Magazine. We are limited to 150 words. We are to talk it up and talk it up even more for the coming months so here it is, you read it first right here:

With the wet season well and truly upon us we are seeing spectacular mornings and thunderstorms in the afternoon. This hasn’t affected the fishing at most of the rain is falling over the islands. We are still seeing plenty of mahi-mahi and a few wahoo. Most operators are finding a marlin or two a day and you could expect to catch at least one. November is traditionally one of the better fishing months in the Vanuatu waters however we haven’t seen the run of big yellowfin yet. Several of the operators are still doing week long trips to the outer islands and have been doing very well on G.T’s and dogtooth tuna. We are now looking forward to the influx of holiday makers through the festive season and the fishing is looking good for those venturing out into these magnificent waters. The fishing club and several operators are about to deploy several new F.A.D’s to improve things even more if you are fishing out of Port Vila.

Hollywood movie producer Paul Mason and his some Barry have been at it again. We were out for a days fishing yesterday. Fishing in Vanuatu has been high on Paul’s list of destination for the last 4 years. Yesterday we missed the hot bite due to getting away a little late and it was almost lunch time before we saw our first fish. A blue marlin had 3 shots at climbing onto the shotgun but no hookup was achieved.

We didn’t see another fish until 4pm with another blue at about 70kg coming up on the short corner and peeling off at 200mph. Fifteen minutes into the battle Barry had the fish up by the boat where it received a tag and was sent on its way.

We are off on Monday for and overnighter with Paul and Barry ” I dont think Helga is coming this time” so stay tuned.

Paul has now been fishing with me for 4 years now and has been a regular competitor in the Vanuatu Marlin Classic, and the Port Vila Game Fishing Club November tournament.

We are just back from another adventure fishing in Vanuatu. Chris, Dave and Tony did a 5 day trip with us. This trip we traveled to Epi where we fished for a few days then is was on tho the Maskelyne Islands at the S/E end of Malekula. We had some very good popper fishing in around the reefs. This was a 5 day trip with over 10 species of fish caught. We have located an island style guest house accomodation in Port Sandwich that gives us some greater fishing options around the Maskelyne Islands. the boys managed a lot of personal bests and cristened some untried fishing gear.

We received a phone call from a resort we do some work with http://www.thehavannah.com/ asking if Shogun was available for a day charter. After everything was arranged our guests Paul and Bell arrived several days later wet to the skin but busting to go fishing. They had hired a beach buggy to travel around in however there was a torrential downpour during the night and into the next morning leaving them trying to get back into Port Vila holding and umbrella where the roof should be trying to keep dry. We started fishing the F.A.D however there was not a lot happening. After drifting baits then dropping a bonito down to the depths we were hooked up on a shark of good size. From there it was on to Devils Reef. As soon as we got there a mahi-mahi climbed on. The action was steady through out the day with several more mahi-mahi turning up.

These 2 intrepid anglers have the good fortune to live in Darwin and have their own boat so they are fish constantly however Paul hadn’t caught a marlin so that was the main aim for the day. Just after lunch we had a strike however no hook up. Gun deck hand Sam shot out a bait on 15kg that he had earlier prepared and we were on. Well on for a short amount on time. In the passing over of the rod we ended up with a small overrun on the reel and a bust off.

No sooner that that happened we had another strike, this time a sail was well and truly on. As this was all happening the marlin that we had just broken off came jumping past the boat on the starboard side close enough to just about free tag it. Exciting stuff.

A couple more mahi-mahi were caught and the last I saw of Bell and Paul they were heading off to Havannah Resort again to have some of the fish cooked and were planning to sit at the table on the end of the jetty overlooking Havanah Harbour.
